Society of Genealogists Events Code of Conduct

The Society of Genealogists is committed to providing welcoming, respectful and constructive events for everyone who attends.

We recognise that participants bring different experiences, perspectives and opinions, and we welcome appropriate discussion and debate. To ensure our events remain enjoyable and useful for everyone, we ask all participants to:

  • Treat speakers, hosts and fellow participants with courtesy and respect.
  • Allow others the opportunity to participate. Please avoid interrupting, speaking over others, or dominating discussions and Q&A sessions.
  • Keep contributions relevant to the event. Questions and comments should relate to the subject under discussion and should not prevent the event from progressing.
  • Respect differences of opinion. Constructive disagreement is welcome; personal criticism, hostile or inappropriate comments, and disruptive behaviour are not.
  • Follow reasonable directions from the event host. Hosts may manage microphones, cameras, chat, speaking order and Q&A in order to facilitate the event effectively.
  • Respect the privacy of participants and the Society’s content. Screenshots, recordings and the use of automated or AI transcription or recording tools are not permitted without prior authorisation from the Society.

Managing disruptive behaviour

The event host is responsible for the effective running of the session and may intervene where a participant’s behaviour is disruptive or is affecting the experience of others.

Where necessary, the host may ask a participant to stop a particular behaviour, mute or restrict their participation, or remove them from the event. Repeated or serious breaches of this Code of Conduct may result in restrictions on attendance at future Society events.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping to make Society of Genealogists events welcoming, engaging and worthwhile.
