Leave a gift in your will

Leaving us a gift in your will is a great way to leave your mark on the Genealogy Community and help us conserve our collections for generations to come.

Many of our conservation and digitisation projects wouldn't have been possible without the gifts we've received over the years. Gifts and donations also support us to achieve our charitable objectives.

There are a number of different ways to give through your will, and your donation will be exempt from Inheritance Tax.

A gift in a will enabled us to start our Pedigree Roll project which will see our collection of around 10,000 handwritten family trees digitised, indexed, and available online.

Unlocking this valuable source of unique genealogical data is a milestone for the Society and your gift could help us achieve our next.

How to leave a gift in your Will

If you wish to include us in your Will, you will need our registered name, address and charity number:

Registered name: Society of Genealogists

Address: Ground Floor, 1/7 Station Road, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 1HT

Registered Charity number: 233701 (United Kingdom)

Ways of leaving a gift in your will

Share of estate - Known as a residuary gift. After family and friends are provided for, you can leave a share of what remains to us. Residuary gifts keep up with inflation, so you may not need to update your Will in future.

Sum of money - Also known as a Pecuniary gift. A specific amount of money you desire to donate. Such gifts can be expressed to be ‘index linked’ so the sum gift holds its value in line with inflation.

Valuable item - You can choose to leave a specific item, such as furniture, jewellery or even a property.

Reduce inheritance tax

A gift to charity is free from inheritance tax and if you leave more than 10% of your entire estate to charity then the total amount of inheritance tax you pay reduces from 40% to 36%
