People suffering with dementia and memory loss often talk about their parents and siblings more than about their own children, they talk about the more distant past.
The ability to create new memories becomes harder for someone who has dementia and older memories are more established meaning a person with dementia is still be able to recall detailed memories from earlier life.
This presentation will explain the importance of focussing on these times in a person’s life, by understanding more about the early life of a person who has dementia helps to explore meaningful discussions and chats with friends and family members; this not only provides topics of interest to the person having the chat but provides a memory stimulus for the person who has dementia.
The FAN method (family, associates and neighbours) will be used to create a resource to be used with the person and their family.
Family history relates to known people and places, is meaningful and is common ground between family members.

Jude Rhodes splits her working life between family history research and nursing.
Jude qualified as a genealogist through the Pharos and Society of Genealogists Advanced Skills and Strategies course and is a member of the British Association of Local History Outreach Committee and an AGRA Associate.
Jude’s main geographical area of interest in family and local history is in Yorkshire with a specialism of the Yorkshire Dales, including Ancestral Visits.
As a Registered Nurse, working in nurse education, Jude also works with individuals, and their families, who are living with dementia using family history, and the FAN method, to create personalised books to stimulate meaningful and relevant conversations.
