Family history narratives can take many forms, yet storytellers usually focus on written narratives, biographies and character sketches. Today we have better digital tools to complete these projects ourselves. And yet, we’re left wondering whether these stories get our kids interested.
With digital tools, the realm of possible projects has greatly expanded to include media like voice and video. Today printed materials go well beyond books books to include objects, calendars and even board games. Simple builder tools make interactive elements like websites, games and apps possible for non-technical people too. This expansion gives storytellers the flexibility to focus on the forms that will be most interesting to children.
Finally, we can focus on the stories that will inspire them to a life-long interest in their ancestors, history and the communities they’ve grown up in.
This talk will share tested practical recipes that can be tuned to specific interests and skill sets of children while eschewing proprietary platforms or packaged templates. The approach is also mindful of essential elements like archiving and privacy.

The growing community hosts monthly events and an active online community. All programming and resources are offered for free.
