This talk explores the dead on the margins of early modern England. Those individuals and groups who were subjected to both physical and social marginalisation both in life and especially in death.
It examines the records we can use to trace the treatment of the body after death for those who have left very little in this manner or whose records are not easily recognised or accessible. Demonstrating what to look for, and where to look for the poorer, itinerate, the criminal, the suicide, or an individual subjected to an accidental death, will be uncovered.
Some sources will be familiar to the researcher, while others, such as Sheriff Cravings and Grave Digger Notes are potentially less well-known.
