Rediscovering Your Roots: An Introduction to Caribbean Genealogy

Britain has a long and challenging history with many Caribbean countries. This has led to a significant Caribbean diaspora residing here, largely descended from the so-called ‘Windrush Generation’ and who may be several generations removed from their Caribbean roots. Many with Caribbean heritage now feel a call to reconnect with their ancestral homelands and understand their history. Family history is a rewarding way to achieve this.

In this introduction to Caribbean Genealogy Dr Gibbs will discuss the records available for countries and British Overseas Territories which were a part of the British West Indies, the challenges posed by researching in this area, and how to use DNA testing to overcome some of these challenges. Given the scope, she will use her journey to identify her ancestors as a guide to records and the use of DNA testing.

This talk is suitable for those wanting to research their own ancestors in the Caribbean and for professionals wanting to learn how to research in the Caribbean.

As a charity passionate about the importance of family history for everyone, we are delighted to be able to offer you this talk for free.
