The talk will be a wide-ranging exploration of the website http://workhouses.org.uk/, which currently comprises around 4,000 pages of information and 7,500 images. As well as content which may be more obviously of interest to family historians, such as census listings and sources for other records, the site includes a wealth of material covering perhaps less obvious topics, such as the larger poor relief system of which the workhouse was just one element. Prior to the Victorian period, it was the individual s who paid for poor relief that were far more likely to be documented than those who benefitted from it. The site also has a huge amount of information on individual establishments, not just workhouses themselves but also the plethora of other institutions that they spawned, such as hospitals and children’s homes. In addition to these, the covers a variety of other resources for the poor such as Salvation Army shelters and Rowton Houses
