Ships make up a critical portion of genealogy, and of world history, but doing that research can be difficult. Finding information about vessels an ancestor emigrated on or served on can help us understand their experience, even when we don’t have their words or records. This program will highlight ways of learning about ships, maritime history, and emigration, as they relate to genealogy.
Attendees will better understand what resources exist for this research and how to use them more effectively.
Peter McCracken is an electronic resources librarian at Cornell University, where he has worked with electronic resources and Open Access publishing, among other projects, since 2016. In 2009, he co-founded ShipIndex.org, a company that helps people do research on ships. As a maritime researcher, Peter wrote 65 quarterly columns on “Maritime History on the Internet” in Sea History magazine and he has presented numerous webinars for genealogy societies and maritime organizations on doing maritime history research online. Peter holds a BA in English Literature, an MS in Library Science, and an MA in Maritime History.
