From ragged school to university The records of local and public (i.e. private) schools, colleges and universities can provide remarkable genealogical information and insight into the lives of our ancestors from the 20th to the 17th centuries and even earlier.
The Society’s collection of printed and published resources and access to online materials is a useful starting point. This introduction includes a background to education in England and the types of schools and institutions you might find.
Else Churchill is the Genealogist at the Society of Genealogists in London. Formerly a professional genealogical librarian and researcher, Else has worked for the SoG since 1994. She is the Society’s subject lead, working across the organisation and runs the publishing programme. She was the recipient of the IHGS Julian Bickersteth Memorial Medal in 2023 for her exemplary contribution to family history studies.
