After a presentation updating us on all the news from the world of DNA, Debbie Kennett delivers a Q&A session.
The questions addressed were:
My mother has recently taken an autosomal ancestry DNA test and has come back 12% Scottish. Why? That’s equivalent of a great grandparent.
What in the processing can cause inherited DNA to produce varying results for individuals and why? Occasionally, an Ancestry DNA match that my children/grandchildren share with me is greater than mine e.g. I have a 36cM match with a 3rd cousin; my daughter’s match with this cousin is 51cM. Which cM match is correct or is it within the range of both results? Also, sometimes a grandchild shares a match with me but their parent, my offspring, does not. What occurs in processing to get these different results from the same inherited DNA? Again, with the latest regions’ update, our son and daughter are both said to have Netherlands origins yet neither my husband or I have any; we both have some German though. Why and how does the DNA our offspring inherit from us, sometimes produce slightly different results when processed?
Debbie Kennett is a well-known author and speaker and an internationally recognised expert on genetic genealogy. She is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. She is the author of two books: DNA and Social Networking and The Surnames Handbook. She has written widely about DNA testing both for the family history press and in academic journals. She has been interviewed about genetic ancestry testing for BBC Radio 4, appearing on You and Yours and The Business of Genetic Ancestry, and has also appeared on TV on the BBC programme Watchdog.
