What did your ancestor do in the Customs and Excise service?
Did they move around the country?
Were they based in a port or in an inland town?
This talk will trace the history and functions of the Customs and Excise and its changing roles and will look at what records are available and how you can access them. The Customs and Excise were two distinct departments until their merger in 1909, although the roles of their officers were similar and sometimes overlapped. This can lead to confusion and difficulty when tracing an ancestor.
This talk will help to make your research less taxing.
