Do you have coal miners in the family? Jill Clapham, Librarian at the National Coal Mining Museum, aims to help us understand more about the lives they led.
Jill explains the different types of jobs the miners held and what that entailed. She gives us a brief history of coal mining and working conditions, especially for children. She explains the important 1842 Mines Act that introduced a minimum age for boys in underground work.
Jill also gives us an overview of the published resources in the National Coal Mining Museum library, how to visit to do research, and the work of the Museum.
About the speaker: Jill Clapham is the part-time librarian at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. She has worked there since 2006 when she was appointed Library Assistant, she job shared the post of Librarian from April, 2013 until 2018 when she became sole librarian. Jill’s previous employment brought her into contact with Public Libraries throughout the country and after completing her BA (Hons) Humanities with the Open University in 2002 she went on to study for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Librarianship with the University of Sheffield. She is originally from Castleford, West Yorkshire a former industrial town which was surrounded by many coal mines; several generations of her family worked in the industry.
