Why is Newcastle-upon-Tyne only known as a ‘party town’? Tourists, usually coming from York or the Lake District, go straight up to Edinburgh, with only a quick stop at Hadrian’s Wall or Vindolanda. They miss out on the rich history of culture and innovation in Newcastle itself.
In the last 40 years, Newcastle has become a hen and stag do destination. The popularity of the disco boats with revolving dancefloors and Channel 4’s edgy music show, The Tube, probably have something to do with it.
There are several theatres and an art gallery in Newcastle, plus the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead and the Hancock Museum, funded partly for the edification of the public.
In terms of innovation, Northumbria was home to Joseph Swan (lightbulbs), George Stephenson (engine and safety lamp for miners) and William Armstrong, known as the Magician of the North (owner of Cragside). How can we celebrate these today?
