A Terrible Beauty: Researching Irish Revolutionary Ancestors

The Irish have long held a reputation as fighters and revolutionaries. This was especially true in the years 1916 – 1922 when Irish separatists engaged in a bitter struggle for Irish independence against the forces of the British Crown. But this revolutionary past stretches back further to the closing years of the 1700’s and the later aftermath of the Great Famine of the 1840’s.
Groups such as the United Irishmen, the Fenians and the Irish Republican Brotherhood all saw themselves as revolutionaries fighting for an Ireland independent of British rule. Who were these revolutionaries and what were their ultimate goals?
This talk will discuss the history of Irish revolutionary movements and provide a detailed examination of what sources survive and where to find information on ancestors who may have been involved. This will include intelligence records, police reports, surviving correspondence and oral histories.
Outline:
  • Background to Irish revolutions. A brief history of 1798 and 19th century uprisings.
  • Irish revolutionary groups. United Irishmen, Young Irelanders, Fenians and Irish Volunteers.
  • 1916 and the Irish War of Independence 1919 – 1921.
  • British and Irish combatants.
  • Aftermath of the revolution. Irish Civil War and emigration.
