Death was only the beginning of a rich documentary trail. This talk explores the wealth of records created from the moment of death through burial and commemoration, including undertakers’ records, burial registers, cemetery records, grave books, cremation records, monumental inscriptions and probate material. Discover how the Society of Genealogists’ collections, together with archives and online resources elsewhere, can help identify family relationships, reveal forgotten stories and overcome genealogical brick walls.
Else Churchill is the Genealogist at the Society of Genealogists in London. Formerly a professional genealogical librarian and researcher, Else has worked for the SoG since 1994. She is the Society’s subject lead, working across the organisation and runs the publishing programme. She was the recipient of the IHGS Julian Bickersteth Memorial Medal in 2023 for her exemplary contribution to family history studies.
