The Lost Child tells the story of Nick Barratt’s grandmother’s parentage and upbringing and tackles the ultimate brick wall for an English genealogist – informal fostering prior to official adoption records, for a child born overseas without any parental details.
The session follows his research across three continents to uncover who her parents were, and what happened to them – showcasing a range of research techniques in the process, such as DNA, passenger lists, networking, directories and newspapers.
Dr Nick Barratt obtained his PhD in history from King's College London, and his thesis became the cornerstone for his academic work on medieval state finance and fiscal history. At the National Archives he previously was head of Medieval, Early Modern Legal, Maps & Photographs, and has also worked as director at the Senate House Library and was president of the Family History Federation for ten years. Nick started work in television as a specialist archive researcher and consultant for a number of programmes, including House Detectives and Who Do You Think You Are. He is the owner of Sticks Research Agency, which provides expert research and heritage services. Nick has written several books on genealogy and history topics, including Tracing the History of your House. He is Executive Director for Student Journey at Royal Holloway University of London.
