Three Days in Court: The Story of Enoch Whitehouse

Enoch Whitehouse (1893-1954) was born aboard a canal boat, the youngest of 10 children. Being a transient family who were based on the waterways of England, the Whitehouse family proved tricky to trace through government records. However, a search of the British Newspaper Archive revealed that Enoch appeared in court three times in his life – twice as a witness and once as the defendant. This talk looks at these fascinating legal cases, while also investigating how the newspaper reports can uncover more details about Enoch’s daily life.
