Here you can see digital images of a selection of hand-crafted historical Family Trees which have been scanned, indexed and then uploaded to our new Family Tree explorer application called TreeSearch™ – made possible with Art Fund support.

We are making a small selection of these Family Trees available to our members and the public at this stage. Over the next six to twelve months, we will be loading the whole collection of over 20,000 images with indexes, containing over a million names, and those will all be available to our members.

Please note that this initial launch of TreeSearch™ is being made available to test it within a live environment. It is fully functional, but is also still being developed. We welcome feedback on any aspect of it, especially the look and feel, functionality and also accessibility across different devices.

It was drawn up in 1839 by a 14 year old boy, from “the original compiled by his father”. The father, Charles, was born in 1790, so this pedigree is probably based on a great deal of first hand knowledge. It is beautifully written and illustrated including detailed drawings of two houses and a church relevant to family members. Notes on the edge of the tree describe land holdings and other details about some of the families who married in.

The latest… This very old pedigree was begun by Anthony Abdy at the time of his daughter’s death in 1623 with additional details added later. The latest date shown on the tree appears to be 1811. At the top of the tree is a beautiful and rather poignant description of his daughter as he saw her at the time of her death. Another curious feature of this tree is that the original date for the description was altered at some stage from 1623 (which was correct) to 1723 (which is not). We do not know who did this or why.
