Geographical (was County) Resources

Geographical Resources -  Introduction

These pages list some of the places in Britain, Ireland and world-wide for which the Society holds sources. For details click on the link to SOGCAT, the library catalogue, and do a Subject search for the specific place which you are interested in.

Place names

The county names are those in use before the 1974 reorganisation of local government. In the overseas section the names are generally those current at the time when the records were created e.g. India includes Bangladesh, Ceylon (sic) etc.

Place names which include an additional distinguishing element, e.g. Upper, Great, North, Old, are listed with the main place name element first, e.g. Cadbury, North. This ensures that places which are next to each other geographically are listed together. The dedications of parish churches, e.g. St. Mary, are included where they are given in the original source.

Abbreviations used in the catalogue

Those most frequently used are:

C = Christenings
M = Marriages
B = Burials
MIs = Monumental (i.e. Tombstone) Inscriptions
(I) = Index
