Mailing Lists

The Society of Genealogists operates two electronic mailing lists based at Rootsweb.

The two lists are:

SOG-UK-L a discussion list
SOG-NEWS-L a news and information list

SOG-UK-L

This list is open to all members of the Society. The aim of this list is to provide a forum for members to exchange opinions on genealogical matters, to help each other by sharing information and experience, advising on the use of Society resources, or the discussion of Society issues. Hopefully, those with expert or technical knowledge will join in to assist others.

However, this list is not an official line of communication to the Society, simply a method for members to contact each other. For queries or problems with Society administration then please use the appropriate address in the back of Genealogists' Magazine or use the Contacting the Society web page.

By default, subscribers to the list will receive each message posted to the list a few minutes after it is posted. However, if you do not wish to receive a large number of individual messages, or if your Internet Service Provider limits the number of messages you can receive per day, then you may wish to receive postings to the list as a "digest", i.e. a single daily mail message containing all the day's postings. The digest list is called SOG-UK-D, but all messages must be posted to the main, non-digest list.

Please note that, whilst professional genealogists, indexers, and record agents who are members, are most welcome to join the list, they must on no account use the list as a means of touting for business or obtaining information from other subscribers to further their commercial activities. Likewise, authors or distributors of books or software are not expected to use the list for direct promotion of their publications.

To join the list for the first time, send an e-mail message to

stating:

your name
your membership number
whether you wish to join the normal mail list [default], or the digest list.

Any postings you make to the list must be made from the same e-mail address that you use to subscribe to the list. Please note that each subscriber has to be added to the list manually by the list administrator rather than automatically, so please do not be surprised if it takes a day or two for messages from the list to start appearing in your mailbox. Please read the Rules & Guidelines for list members.

SOG-NEWS-L

This list is open to anybody interested in the activities of the Society, both non-members and those members who do not wish to be involved with the discussion list. The list will be used to post notices about Society events, courses, special library acquisitions, etc., or for comments on genealogical issues from the Society. Messages will be posted here by the Society on an occasional basis, so there is no requirement for a digest. Subscribers to the list will not be able to post messages to the list themselves.

To subscribe to SOG-NEWS-L send an e-mail message to

containing the message

subscribe

and nothing else. If your mailing software automatically adds a signature to outgoing messages, please remember to turn this feature off before sending your subscribe message.

If you subscribe to the discussion list, there is no benefit in joining the news list, since all messages to SOG-NEWS-L will be also be posted to SOG-UK-L
