Introduction to the Birth Brief Collection
Introduction
This index contains around 28,000 surnames supplied by members of the Society of Genealogists who compiled Birth Brief forms. Variations have been listed separately, as have been names that appear both as hyphenated and non-hyphenated. Many surnames appear on more than one Birth Brief form, and the Surname Index to the Birth Briefs should be consulted to find the appropriate volume and folio reference.
There are some names that appear to have been misspelt by the original compiler (e.g. Crofs, Mafsey where the long S appears when the name includes a double S) and no correction has been made by the indexer of the Birth Briefs.
Currently, all Birth Briefs received are published in the next available issue of the Genealogists’ Magazine. This index contains the surnames in all Birth Briefs published in the Genealogists’ Magazine up to and including the issue for December 2006.
The Birth Briefs are stored in bound volumes, available on the open shelves in the Upper Library, together with a Surname Index, showing the volume and folio number for any surname of interest.

Important Notice
There is also much unbound material on families and surnames in the Society's Special Collections which are accessed by a comprehensive surname card index in the Lower Library. Please note that those names are NOT cross referred to in this index. If you would like to know if a surname appears in the Special Collections index, please enquire via the link to the Limited search & copy service.
All bound family history material is listed on SOGCAT, the Society’s on-line catalogue.
- Click on this link to go to the Online Library Catalogue SOGCAT page
- Change the default "Look for" list from titles by clicking on the downward pointing chevron and clicking on "Subject"
- In the "Begins with" box, type in the first six or so letters of the surname you are seeking
- Click on the "Go" button. The relevant entry, if present, should be followed by the word surname in brackets e.g. Smith (surname)
- Click on the name to see the titles
If you cannot visit the Society to see items of interest, the Research Assistant, may be able to copy up to 5% of a bound family history, provided that the name you seek is indexed. Enquiries should be made by following the link to the Limited search & copy service.
